Modern Vintage: Treasured Blog Hop

Welcome! I’m so glad you’re here for my day on the Modern Vintage: Treasured Project Hop! My name is Lisa Ruble, and I design under the name Quilty Zest. I’m also a fellow Benartex fabric designer of Rachel’s, and I’m so excited to be talking about her fabric today!

I’ve been an admirer of Rachel’s fabric ever since Bee Haven came out in shops, and then I had the pleasure of spending several days with Rachel at QuiltCon last February, and now I consider her a friend - she’s as lovely as her fabric!

The project I’m sharing on this blog hop is one I designed for Benartex’s Fat Quarterly newsletter. The FQ featured Modern Vintage in the Summer 2025 issue, and as the newsletter editor, I had the enjoyable job of creating a fabric out of 5” squares from the line. I paired them with Rachel’s intriguing stripe to make easy placemats - easy because that stripe does all the work!

If you’re interested in making these placemats, I have good news! You can order the Summer 2025 issue of the Fat Quarterly here (it comes with a 5” square of each print in the collection, plus the pattern to make these placemats and a wall hanging by Debby Kratovil).

And…both Rachel and I will be part of Benartex’s Swatch & Learn, an exclusive LIVE event for Fat Quarterly subscribers on Wednesday, July 30th at 10:30 am EDT. Rachel will be talking about Modern Vintage, and I’ll be sharing how I fussy cut the stripe to make these placemats.

How about a couple more beauty shots of these placemats? (And do you love those orange ranunculus blooms as much as I do? They’re not poppies like in Rachel’s fabric, but they have a similar look. Such a great Trader Joe’s find!)

This placemat uses the wider section of the vase stripe, stitched to the top of several charm squares.

And this placemat uses the narrower floral section of the stripe, bookended by charm squares. Both simple, yet stunning!
