Curlicues

I’d like to introduce you to my Curlicues quilt pattern.
This quilt has been a long time in the making. I first stitched a version of it back in 2015, which was featured in Modern Patchwork magazine. That version looks very different from the current Curlicues pattern, and it was made using all my turquoise scraps.

Life got in the way, and now it’s 11 years later and I’ve finally released it as my own pattern! And even better, using my new Refresh fabric collection from Benartex!

This quilt measures 58” x 72” and is made up of drunkard’s path (aka quarter circle) blocks. Yep, that’s curved piecing. But…it’s easier than you think! Watch my curved piecing technique video here. The pattern includes paper templates that you can trace on to cardboard or plastic template material. I also have precut plastic templates for sale, coming the week of 9/15!

After you’ve cut all your template pieces (my video talks all about that), pinning is the key to sewing smooth curves. The more pins, the better. Want to know more? Check out my video.

Let’s talk color - I used all the rainbow colors from my Refresh collection in this quilt. It has warm color (red, orange, yellow) rows and cool color (green, aqua, blue) rows. The sample I made uses white/low volume prints for the backgrounds, but I also colored a version with a dark background - the colors really pop, don’t they?!
