Strippy Improv Holiday QAL - week 3
It's week 3 of the Strippy Improv Holiday QAL! How are your blocks looking?
We've been in a block making whirlwind here--I've been sewing blocks, and so have my two younger boys. I even turned two blocks into mini quilts for my quilt guild's gift exchange last night. (Such a great quick gift idea!) Here they are:
Last week, I talked about making snowman and candy cane blocks. This week, let's discuss ornaments, trees, and stars.
Ornaments: These offer so many color opportunities! You can stick with a more traditional red/green color combo...
Or branch out! I think that ornaments offer a really fun chance to use some fun prints (check out the purple/white print below). You can also add in great details when you quilt it. And don't forget to dig out some silvery gray or metallic gold for the ornament cap!
Trees: I like to use a fairly wide range of greens in my trees; partly because I don't have a lot of darker forest-y greens and partly because I like the variety!
If you want to decorate your tree, consider doing the stitching BEFORE you fuse the background shape on. It's much easier to do this because the edges will be covered up. Play around with those decorative stitches! Maybe even some metallic thread... Have some fun!
Something to think about - I added snow to this tree. I really like the modern look it creates!
What blocks are you making?
Next week we'll talk about assembly options - square wall hangings, table runners, and a quick mini quilt finish.

Sew along with me to create a holiday wall quilt or table runner before Christmas! I'll post once a week with tips and advice (plus that all-important accountability!) to keep us on track. These blocks are addicting...just wait and see!
